Job Description

About the role

The Assistant Chef is responsible for preparing and cooking a nutritious seasonal menu as directed by the Head Chef that meets the highest standards and aligns with the Australian Dietary Guidelines. The Assistant Chef will cater for up to thirty-five people, providing meals for morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper, including catering for special dietary requirements over the weekend.

Other key responsibilities include but are not limited to;

Policies, Procedures, and Regulations

  • Ensure kitchen and food service compliance with Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit standards and Australian Food Safe Guidelines.
  • Continuously review and improve services.
  • Complete kitchen audits and daily fridge and freezer temperature checks.

Kitchen Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the kitchen, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Develop and implement a nutritious monthly menu using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
  • Ensure meals cater to special dietary requirements.
  • Prioritise Workplace Health and Safety in all kitchen operations.

Food Preparation and Handling

  • Prepare and cater meals for up to thirty-five people, ensuring temperature checks and food safety.
  • Maintain a clean and attractive dining area.
  • Cater for residential functions as needed.
  • Adhere to food handling, waste management, and occupational hygiene and safety practices.

Liaison with the Head Chef

  • The Assistant Chef will highlight, report, and discuss any kitchen related issues with the Head Chef.
  • The Assistant Chef will meet with and engage in supervision with the Head Chef or delegate once per fortnight.
  • The Assistant Chef will follow direction from the Head Chef.
  • Work to resolve feedback from service users effectively.

This role is part-time offering 36 hours per fortnight which includes working, every Saturday and Sunday and every 2nd Monday for 6 hours.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will possess;

Qualifications

  • Certificate in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent) and/or experience as a Cook in a service organisation.
     

Experience and Skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills, particularly with individuals experiencing mental health distress.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Experience in catering for small functions.
  • Knowledge of food service methods, sanitation principles, and safe food handling.
  • Lived experience of mental health recovery or as a family member of someone in recovery is desirable.
  • Knowledge and commitment to Equal Opportunity in employment and service delivery.
  • Knowledge of food safety legislation.

Other

  • Current National Police Clearance.
  • Current Senior First Aid Certificate.
  • Current WA Driver’s License.
